CBM per carton = Length × Width × Height in meters.

Total shipment CBM is the sum of each carton type's CBM multiplied by its quantity.

EXAMPLE

CBM Calculation Example

Suppose one carton measures 60 cm × 40 cm × 35 cm.

First convert the dimensions to meters:

0.60 × 0.40 × 0.35 = 0.084 m³ per carton

If the shipment contains 20 cartons:

0.084 × 20 = 1.680 m³ total shipment volume

This equals approximately 59.33 cubic feet. If each carton weighs 12 kg, the total gross weight would be 240 kg.

Why Is CBM Important in Shipping?

CBM is commonly used to measure cargo volume for freight, warehousing and transport planning.

It helps estimate how much space a shipment may occupy inside a truck, pallet area or shipping container. Freight forwarders may also use shipment dimensions together with weight when determining chargeable freight.

CBM alone does not confirm whether cargo will physically fit, because actual loading also depends on carton dimensions, orientation, stacking, pallets and vehicle or container limits.

How to Use CBM in Shipping and Load Planning

CBM is most useful when it is treated as a volume-planning measure rather than a guarantee that cargo will physically fit into a vehicle or container.

Estimate Shipment Volume

Use total CBM to understand the approximate space required by the shipment. This is useful when comparing shipment sizes, planning warehouse space or discussing freight requirements with a carrier or freight forwarder.

Compare Against Available Capacity

Total CBM can be compared with the nominal volume of a truck or shipping container as an initial planning reference. However, usable capacity may be lower because of carton dimensions, pallets, stacking limits and loading clearances.

Check Weight as Well as Volume

A shipment may fit by volume but still exceed vehicle, container, pallet or handling weight limits. Volume and gross weight should therefore be reviewed together during load planning.

Consider Carton Orientation

Two shipments with the same total CBM can have very different loading efficiency. Long, irregular or non-stackable cartons may leave unused spaces even when the calculated total volume appears to fit.

For final loading decisions, use actual internal vehicle or container dimensions together with carton dimensions, orientation, stacking rules and weight limits. CBM provides the overall volume, while a loading calculator is better suited to checking how individual cartons may fit.

Common CBM Calculation and Shipping Mistakes

Mixing Different Dimension Units

Length, width and height must use consistent units before volume is calculated. Mixing centimeters, meters or inches without conversion can produce a significantly incorrect CBM result.

Forgetting the Carton Quantity

CBM per carton represents only one package. For multiple identical cartons, multiply the volume of one carton by the total quantity to calculate the shipment volume.

Using Product Size Instead of Packed Size

Shipping volume should normally be calculated from the external dimensions of the packed carton or package. Product dimensions alone may not include packaging, protective material or outer cartons.

Assuming CBM Equals Usable Container Space

Nominal container volume cannot normally be used at 100% efficiency. Carton dimensions, pallets, loading clearances, orientation and non-stackable cargo can create unused space.

Ignoring Gross Weight

A shipment may appear to fit comfortably by CBM but still exceed weight limits. Check cargo weight together with volume when planning containers, vehicles, pallets and handling operations.

CBM measures the physical volume occupied by cargo. Volumetric weight is a separate freight calculation that converts package dimensions into a chargeable weight reference using a carrier or transport-specific divisor.
