Gross Amount = Net Amount ร (1 + VAT Rate)
How a 5% VAT calculation works
For a net amount of QAR 1,000 with a 5% VAT rate, the VAT is QAR 50 and the gross amount is QAR 1,050.
Net Amount: QAR 1,000 โข VAT 5%: QAR 50 โข Gross Amount: QAR 1,050
Add VAT or work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price
Choose the calculation depending on whether your starting amount excludes or already includes VAT.
Add VAT
Start with a net amount and calculate the VAT amount and final gross total.
Net + VAT โ GrossRemove VAT
Start with a VAT-inclusive gross amount and calculate the underlying net value and VAT.
Gross โ Net + VATHow VAT is calculated
Adding VAT and removing VAT require different formulas. Simply subtracting the VAT percentage from a gross amount does not correctly remove included VAT.
Adding VAT
Multiply the net amount by the VAT rate to calculate the VAT amount.
VAT = Net ร VAT RateGross Amount
Add the calculated VAT amount to the original net amount.
Gross = Net + VATRemoving VAT
Divide the VAT-inclusive gross amount by one plus the VAT rate.
Net = Gross รท (1 + VAT Rate)Net amount, VAT amount and gross amount explained
VAT calculations become easier when you separate the original price, the tax added to that price and the final VAT-inclusive amount.
Net Amount
The net amount is the value before VAT is added. When you use the Add VAT mode, this is the starting amount entered into the calculator.
VAT Amount
The VAT amount is the tax calculated from the applicable VAT rate. For example, 5% VAT on a net amount of QAR 1,000 is QAR 50.
Gross Amount
The gross amount is the total after VAT has been added. In the same example, QAR 1,000 net plus QAR 50 VAT gives a gross amount of QAR 1,050.
VAT-Inclusive Price
When a price already includes VAT, use the Remove VAT mode to calculate the underlying net value. Do not simply subtract the VAT percentage from the gross amount.
Quick check: Net Amount + VAT Amount = Gross Amount. When removing VAT, the calculator works backwards from the gross amount using the VAT rate you enter.
Common mistakes when calculating VAT
VAT calculations can produce incorrect results when the wrong starting amount, rate or calculation method is used.
Subtracting the VAT Percentage from Gross
To remove included VAT, do not simply subtract the VAT percentage from the gross amount. Work backwards by dividing the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate.
Confusing Net and Gross Amounts
Net is the amount before VAT, while gross is the amount after VAT has been included. Check which value you are starting with before choosing Add VAT or Remove VAT.
Using the Wrong VAT Rate
VAT rates can vary depending on the jurisdiction, product, service or transaction. Enter the rate that actually applies to the calculation you are making.
Treating the Calculator as Tax Advice
The calculator performs the mathematical VAT calculation using the rate you enter. It does not determine taxability, exemptions, registration requirements or other tax obligations.

Use the VAT rate that applies to your transaction

VAT Calculator โ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net amount by the VAT percentage to calculate the VAT amount, then add that VAT amount to the net value.
How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount?
Divide the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. The difference between the gross and calculated net amount is the included VAT.
Can I enter my own VAT rate?
Yes. The calculator uses the VAT percentage you enter, so it can be used with different VAT rates.
Why can't I simply subtract 5% from a VAT-inclusive price?
Because the VAT percentage is calculated from the net value, not from the VAT-inclusive gross value. Removing VAT therefore requires dividing the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate.
Does DIXANI determine which VAT rate I should use?
No. VAT rates and tax rules vary by jurisdiction and transaction. You should enter the rate that applies to your situation.
